Introduction to Google EDLA Certification

1. Introduction to GMS EDLA (Enterprise Device Licensing Agreement) certification

The full name of GMS is Google Mobile Service (Google Mobile Service), GMS certification simply means that mobile devices using Android system have been approved by Google after a series of tests by Google, and can legally use various software services provided by Google, including Chrome, Gmail, YouTube, Maps, PlayStore and more. Android devices need GMS certification to run all Google‘s software services, otherwise, uncertified devices will be considered illegal by Google and cannot run any of these software.

2. What is the difference between the EDLA agreement and the common MADA agreement? Should the device use the EDLA agreement or the MADA agreement?

Many customers have such doubts, if my product wants to pass the GMS certification, should I use the MADA agreement or the EDLA agreement? This is to understand the difference between the types of equipment that the MADA agreement and the EDLA agreement mainly target.

MADA agreement: mainly for mobile phones and tablets, meeting all CDD requirements for handheld or tablet devices, with a screen size between 3.3 inches and 18 inches, and must have a battery.

EDLA agreement: The full name of EDLA is Enterprise Device Licensing Agreement. The EDLA agreement is an agreement recently launched by Google, it can be understood as a supplement to equipment other than the MADA agreement. The equipment can be without batteries, and the screen size can be up to 70 or even 100 inches, that is, That is, if the device does not have a battery, or the screen size exceeds 18 inches, the EDLA agreement must be used.

There is also the GAS agreement: Google Automotive Services, this agreement is relatively rare, and it is a agreement required for applying for GMS certification for automotive equipment.

3. The difference between using EDLA agreement and MADA agreement.

Certification version: The MADA agreement is divided into four versions globally. EU, Türkiye, Russia, Others (Asia America). EDLA is currently only divided into Russia and other regions.

Certification fee: MADA agreement can provide more authorizations at present, so the price is cheaper than EDLA, and EDLA certification is more expensive.

Maintenance after certification: EDLA must be patched (SMR) after certification, and may be upgraded to a major version (LR).

Deadline for certification application: EDLA has a relatively long application period. For the same version, EDLA’s application deadline is longer than MADA’s, generally extended by about one year.
For example, as of now (2023), if the device passes MADA, the Android version needs to be at least 13, and if it is EDLA, the version can be at least 12, but the 12 to 1.31 certification deadline in 2024, if the device version is 12 I can‘t do MADA anymore.

4. What is the difference between the equipment test using the EDLA agreement and the equipment using the MADA agreement in the test or use?
